Rocketeers in Orbit: Amanda Chappell Promotes STEM to Young Minds

At Bottle Rocket, Rocketeers are encouraged to reach out to our community and contribute by donating time and expertise to help promote STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) and the importance of it. Rocketeer Amanda Chappell has done just that! Amanda’s mom is a teacher here in Dallas at a local elementary school that has been searching for after school opportunities for their top achieving 4th and 5th graders to be introduced to engineering and programming concepts.

In an effort to provide this type of program and to get these young, brilliant minds excited about STEM at a young age, Amanda introduced The Bottle Rocket Coding Club that began yesterday with an Intro to Teaching class! The class kicked off the kids’ chapter on technology and gave them real world examples of how schools encourage the use of technology in their teaching.

Throughout the 14-week curriculum, the kids will be taught coding such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The goal of the program is to demonstrate how engineering is based on problem solving, how technology skills create a multitude of opportunities and to show the kids what career possibilities exist in the field of engineering. The classes will be guided step by step as a group, but will also provide individual attention to students so that they can learn at their own pace. We’re proud of Amanda for contributing her time to help foster and mentor future engineers and quite possibly, future Rocketeers!
